Remus Lupin stared outside his bedroom window. His bedroom was small, painted a pasty white with bookshelves pushed against the wall. A bed was squished between the bookshelf and his small desk that barely fit if it wasn't for his father performing a minimizing charm.
Remus for one had thoroughly enjoyed his summer. His father had been working late hours in the Ministry and wasn't home until after midnight and left for work before 5am. With his father gone, Remus was free to read all he wanted without his father badgering him to play outside. His mother had stayed home, meaning that he was able to read with his Muggle mother.
Though he anxiously awaited the owl from his friend, he stared at the night sky. It was quiet, the Full Moon had been two days ago and Remus was glad it was done and over with. Remus stared at the picture Peter had sent him while he was in France. It was a picture of three-fourths of the Marauders. The Marauders, Remus thought fondly, his best friends. The picture consisted of James – a bespectacled boy with messy hair and hazel eyes – a large smile on his face as he laughed at a joke Sirius told. Sirius – a boy with shoulder length hair and grey eyes – ruffled Remus' hair as he slouched and flushed red.
Sirius had made a crude joke, making Remus flush and James cackle with laughter. Remus raced through his memories, looking for the time when Peter took the picture. Sadly, thinking of the year before usually brought Remus' mind back to Thomas Prestridge. Prestridge had been their Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Marauders – a group name that Peter had come up with – had uncovered secrets about him and managed to confront him about it. It involved Sirius getting knocked out, James almost dying, Remus being a trickster, and Peter playing nursemaid.
The year ended on a good note with James promising to send an owl so they would be able to visit him at his house, something that made Sirius sigh in relief. It was finally the last two weeks of summer vacation and the owl hadn't come. What if they forgot about him? What if they hated him? What if they found out he was a werewolf? He mentally berated himself, his friends weren't even suspicious. He was overthinking it.
"Remus! An owl is here from a James Potter!" His mother called. Remus grinned as he threw himself of the bay window and raced down the stairs. Mrs. Lupin raised an eyebrow at her son, "Who's James Potter?" Remus blushed in embarrassment, he was normally reserved, "He's my friend at Hogwarts." Mrs. Lupin smiled at her son, "Do you feel better?" She was of course referring to the broken arm that he had gotten during the Full Moon.
He ripped open the letter and smiled at the familiar messy handwriting.
How was your summer? Sorry that I couldn't write that much over the summer. Mum and dad confiscated my owl and any other means of communication. Sirius managed to get here two days ago but Peter won't be able to come this summer. McGonagall owled his parents and is parents were upset that he risked his life. Dad reckons this year we shouldn't get in trouble this year but obviously, he doesn't know us that well. We're the Marauders.
Can you please visit? Sirius is driving me mad! I was thinking we could brainstorm some pranks on Snivellus. We'll talk about it when you get here. Reply as soon as possible.
"Can I go?" He looked over his shoulder to see his mother staring at the letter. "Who's Sirius?" she asked. Remus smiled, "He's my other friend. Peter is too." She nodded, "I don't know, Remus. Are they a bad influence?" Remus smirked, "They know how to have fun." Mrs. Lupin chuckled, "Alright, I'll tell your father some stupid excuse. I love you, sweetheart." Remus nodded, "I'll be down in a bit." He ran up the stairs.
Mum's fine with it. She said that she'd try to convince dad. Dad was pretty mad that I almost got myself killed. Is Sirius really driving you mad? What could you expect less from him, he's practically a dog. I'll see you soon.
Remus slipped the letter into an envelope and gave it to Ash. Ash hooted and quickly flew away. Remus snorted at his description of Sirius, a dog. That was exactly what Sirius was. He heard the door click open downstairs and he cursed. His father would ask him who he was owling. "Remus!" his father called. He took a breath and ran down the stairs.
"Remus, your mother tells me that you want to go to your friend's house?" Mr. Lupin drank some of his water. Remus gulped, "Yes, James Potter – he's my friend." Mr. Lupin nodded, "Remus, these friends of you are bad influences. You almost died last year." Remus rolled his eyes, his dad was so overprotective, "Dad, I wanted to go on the mission." Mr. Lupin's eyes flashed, "Do not call it a mission! Remus, that wasn't a mission, that was practically suicide!" Remus rolled his eyes, "Can I just go?"
Mr. Lupin sighed and ruffled his son's hair, "Alright. Fine. You can go see your friends."
