Malachy has a long history with both the Irish and Canadian police. Having lived in St John's for a while he believes his life with Rose and the family is almost idylic. They catch bad guys, get paid for w he's woken from this idyl by a case from his past when his granddaughter's safety and his peace of mind are threatened by someone Mal and Jake thought was gone forever.
In a dire situation, Jake finds that though Leslie isn't alive anymore, she is still very much present. Takes place sometime after "Buried" (Season 5x16). Warning: Character death.
Ten years after the Academy, Jake and Leslie meet in a bar. AU.
After Jake's comment to Malachy in 5x11, he goes off the rails a little. Leslie steps in.

With a terminally uncool best friend and the niece he feels responsible for, it was never going to be easy. When he meets Leslie Bennett on the first day of school, he thinks the year may be looking up. That doesn't last long, either.
Following "What I Wouldn't Do" and "There Will Be Love at the End", Leslie falls pregnant.
