With Stewart Whitman's passing earlier this year, I felt moved to create closure for the characters of this extraordinary TV Western. I chose to write between and after the events of the episode Whitey. This episode had explored the spaces between Dulcey and Crown thoroughly. Crown was forced to choose what mattered most in his life and viewers found out that it was not his badge.
Matt Dillon receives a message from Jim Crown saying he caught a murderer wanted for a killing in Dodge. Matt is too busy to go, so he sends his new deputies Heyes and Curry to fetch Bill Johnson back to stand trial.
Matt finds a badly injured girl on the prairie he takes her back to Dodge, then set out with Tobeel and Festus to catch the men who attacked her. The trail leads them to Cimarron where they enlist the aid of Jim Crown helping him stop a band of Comancheros that the men who attacked the girl are associated with. The attack left the girl unable to talk at the end she surprises him.
