"Keep your hands where I can see them, and turn around, slowly."
"Lily," James says, heart sinking, as he complies. The intruder's face and hair is covered by fabric that signature frost blue, and she's standing in the shadows of the saferoom, but, well, James has always been able to recognize her voice. And there's a gun aimed, stance unflinching, at his chest, but it's not even a surprise that she's one of them, one of the rebels storming the castle right now, and so all he can ask is: "How long?"
"Since before we met," Lily admits. "Since I was sixteen. They recruited me to sing their songs, and- I'm sorry James, but the system, your family's rule, is just wrong. It needs to change."
"And the old dynasty never makes it to the next," James finishes, gesturing at the gun. "But I didn't know you were a killer, Lily Evans."
He can see her double-take, at the surname - her real surname. "You- you knew?"
"Yes," James says quietly. "And there are guards waiting, outside, on my signal. I'd- I'd hoped it wouldn't be you."
Lily's somehow stepped forward, only a few feet away now, close enough that he can see her swallow hard (see those emerald eyes that enchanted him from the moment they met, that'll haunt him until the day he dies). "How long have you known?"
"Since the day we met," James is the one to admit, this time. "I've always been able to recognize your voice, and I'd heard some of the recordings, of the rebels' songs, before."
"Then… all this time?"
"Same as you," he says, a little defensively, before backtracking. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean-"
"No, you're right. We were both lying, you as much as me." She laughs, a little bitterly. "No wonder it couldn't last."
"But it was real, at least some of it, for me," James can't help but blurt. "I'd never felt like that before. And I don't think it would've gone that far if at least some part of it wasn't real. If things were different…"
"Bold of you," Lily murmurs, before exhaling slowly. "But you're right. And if we could rewrite, well, everything…"
And they're silent, for that long moment, both processing that declaration that's probably the closest they'll ever get to an 'I love you', before Lily sighs again.
"So what comes next?" She still hasn't lowered her gun.
"We were… prepared," James tells her. "We knew you were the spy, knew when the attack would come. The other rebels have probably already been arrested."
"Then why are you stalling?"
"Because- I had to say it, had to tell you goodbye. For what it's worth, I'm sorry, Lily."
She nods, eyes staring off into the distance as she says, "They asked me, if I'd be able to pull the trigger, even with… everything. I told them I could." And then, before James can piece together what she means, what she implies, she's whispering, "So am I."
And there's a sharp, piercing pain at his chest, and he's falling- falling- but just as everything's swirling, darkening, he sees… her raise something to her mouth and bite down.
