Sherlock has worked hard to limit his words, because he doesn't want to live a life where he doesn't have them. So he doesn't understand why John uses his words so freely. After Sherlock's 'death', John isn't quite convinced that Sherlock's dead. Which means he's in hiding, or something similar. And who better to find him than Walter Sherman?
