In RNM 2x09, we learned from the Sheriff that young Max was screaming & drawing all over the walls with a red crayon. Michael tried to calm him down & took the crayon from him. Then, the Evans' came in and saw Michael, assumed he was disturbed and so they adopted Max and Isobel. This is an AU- Canon Divergent- where Michael never takes the red crayon and instead, HE gets adopted.
