Sequel to The Ugliness of Things. Malcolm asks for a leave of absence to get reassessed by Starfleet in San Francisco. On his way there, however, the transport on which he is travelling is attacked and he finds himself stranded on a planet with other survivors. This story is complete in itself but is intricately linked with The Ugliness of Things, to which it often refers.
A unexpected meeting changes the Enterprise crew in ways they'd never imagined. Title taken from Mae West's quote: "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."
In his anger and grief, Trip's actions wreck what he and Malcolm had so carefully built with each other. Some mistakes can't be undone. Some things can't be rebuilt. All those words of aching apology, echoing in his head and left forever unsaid.
