To Be Alive

Most are lucky enough not to see two wars in one lifetime. She had tried hard to forget, going as far as to abandon her family and the world she grew up in. But as usual history was repeating itself. As if she hadn't already given enough. Her mother had always said "Vivet enim donum est": to be alive is a gift. Sometimes she wished she could give it back.
