Pettigrew was there the night Voldemort murdered James and Lily and when little Harry destroyed him a moment later. His plans ruined, he took Harry away and hid him so that no one would be able to find him. When Harry Potter returns to the magical world, it is to a world that believes his parents killed Voldemort.
