When everyone calmed down after the Battle of Hogwarts and the worst of the injuries had been healed, they realised someone was missing. In the distraction of victory, Harry Potter had slipped away without a word. They assumed he had needed some time alone, that he would come back in a few hours or days, when he was ready.
