James leaves Lily and Harry after the first war. When he comes back he comes back to something he never thought he'd see. His ex wife has remarried his best friend and they have a life and family together. His kids don't even want to meet him because he left their mum because of his own pride and wants not considering she was pregnant and had a young child.
