Loki lets go at the end of the spear. that is not how the story ends, it's how it begins. Crashing into a blue box in the space throws the young Prince to a journey of self discovery, growing and hopefully to become something more. the doctor just wants to make Loki smile again. Loki takes Clara's Place as the doctor's companion and has good/bad adventures through time and space.
