Lady Jane Gray was a wizarding middle class widow. Her husband was a prime languist, killed by Rudolphus Lestrange during the First Wizarding War. She's a frigid cold introvertish widow, not too old, without any foolish social connections and a great teaching skill and knowledge to display. Perhaps this was what attracted Snape so much.
