Next of Kin

Gibbs claimed to be Tim's father one day while at the hospital. He only did that to get answers from the Doc who would only speak to family, right? Months later, (S3 E23) Gibbs is hospitalized. Out of everyone on the team, why is McGee listed as Gibbs's next of kin? The explanation is a tale worthy of Ducky (I hope)
