Petunia responds to the overwhelming responsibility given to her in blankets and a parchment letter. Severus wallows in self pity, then, possibly, remorse. Both of them are subjected to Dumbledore's manipulations because both of them caused a common loved one way too much pain. Maybe saying sorry to those green eyes will help the past forgive them.
