It was a seven year stay in Azkaban before Sirius Black was released. With the help of Amelia Bones and Remus Lupin he took his Godson away, to France, where Dumbledore couldn't interfere. He only went back because he didn't trust them with Harry, nor did he trust the Triwizard Tournament to be anything other than a dangerous mess.
