I always believed that Carlisle left Volterra for a reason. A reason that was both dark, and eternally unsettling. Aro was his friend, but at some point the scales had to fall from Carlisle's eyes, and he would have seen the ancient for what he really was; a beautiful, cunning and manipulative monster.
