In theory, what should happen is that the guy gets the girl (or the other guy, or the promotion, or the whatever), and he and his family settle into a nice house in the suburbs with 2.5 children, a dog, and a happy ending waiting for them just around the corner. But fairy tales don't translate into real life. Not too well, anyway.
