At the first crack of thunder, James's hand flies to his pocket—but the phials that are going to turn them into Animagi are light-years away in Gryffindor Tower, and he and Sirius are rooted to Snape's bedside, unable to move. When they return to the dormitory, they find Peter sitting in bed with one empty phial and two whose contents are not clear, not blood red, but black.
