Quick beginning of season eight fix it. It always bothered me that Sam didn't look for Dean when he was in Purgatory and this is my version of trying to fix it. I always attributed it to poor writing on the writer's part but I wanted an explanation within the world of the show and this is my version of why Sam didn't look for Dean.
