Sirius Black was certainly dead. He couldn't have written to Harry after his death from Amsterdam, could he? That would be impossible? However, the letter was real; it told Harry to get over his brooding, and to get out into the world, and use his fame to play the field, and to get out and make his enemies suffer, in a world where luck rules, and Harry was due a change in fortune.
