The night after Harry had been cleared of all charges in his hearing for using Patronus in Little Whinging, James and Lily appeared to him, and offered him a course of action that would not only set him and a few others free from Dumbledore's manipulations, but also protecting them from Voldemort and his followers. Their interference resulted in a different finish of the war.
