A truth: Sirius was not, in any way, prepared for or in want of a child. But another truth, one no less important, was that just because he felt neither ready nor deserving to raise Harry did not, in any way, mean he did not want to. (Sirius is released from Azkaban and moves back in with Remus when Harry is eight years old. This is not a chance he is willing to waste.)
