Bilbo is a retired soldier. He spent 30 years of his life fighting in wars across Middle Earth before retiring to a quiet life in Hobbiton until the peace and quiet drives him insane and he reenlists. However, Bilbo never does reenlist, due to unforeseen circumstances (because really, what else do you call a thing that sends you back to the end of the Third Age for an adventure?)
