Mystery by Midnight Falls

"Something mangled and ghostly flashed before my eyes. Almost as quickly as it was illuminated, everything went black once again. I leaned closer to the figure on the pile of boulders, blinking, trying to make out the puzzling shape. A white bolt across the sky displayed the lifeless body for a millisecond, and was then followed by a loud crack, choking my terrified screams."
