Dan's feelings for Gump are conflicted; part of him tries to hate his guts, and another part is grudgingly grateful to him. When they reunite for the first time since being in the hospital in Vietnam, all that conflict comes to a head, and only seems to lead to more the harder Dan tries to fight it.
