When Raditz comes to Earth Gohan suffers a critical blow to his eyes. With no Senzu Beans available his vision loss becomes permanent. Wise to the realities of battle, Gohan takes to Piccolos training much more naturally, and develops ways to overcome his blindness, and let his ruthlessness out.
