Harry is cautious enough as to hide his Hogwarts letter and open it in private without any of the Dursleys the wiser. As a consequence he begins to develop his power on his own and he reaches Hogwarts without knowing anything about himself nor about the wizarding world. Amongst other things, no one has the chance to tell him that Slytherin is bad.
