Master Eon was getting old and he knew it. He needed someone who could continue the fight when he couldn't. But people who could become Portal Masters were rare. So he counted his blessings that someone could become one dropped out of the sky-almost literally. Sky, for her part, is just getting annoyed with Kaos' nonsense.
