When Lord Voldemort goes to Godric Hollow on October 31, 1981, he sees Harry Potter, and is stricken by the magical potential he senses in the boy; instead of attempting to kill him, he takes the boy back to the manor to be raised by Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange.
