The mountain wasn't the only thing that was shaking. Thorin felt disconnected from his thoughts as he witnessed two voices fighting for control. When he became suddenly aware of what he had done, he was faced with a choice - try and repair his latest mistake and be forced to admit that what he had thought was most important to him had been eclipse by his desire, or let Bilbo die.
