Before flying away on Buckbeak, Sirius gave Harry the notes on the Animagus Transformation that the Marauders kept hidden in the Shrieking Shack. Harry starts his preparations the moment he returns to the Dursley's. Unfortunately, no one ever told Sirius or Harry that the method the Marauders used had risks.
