Erza was too late in returning Natsu's feelings. When Natsu finally moves on, she gets together with Jellal because it was the next logical step. Only after Erza finally got what she wanted, she soon realizes that being with Jellal didn't feel right. Thus, she began the most difficult quest of her life: Getting Natsu back and making him realize they were meant to be together.
