Summary
The reason that Harry survived the killing curse is due to Death (Thanatos's) promise to always be the one to take the youngest Peverell brother's descendants. By marking them as his rather than Keres (another Death goddess), the killing curse and other violent means of killing cannot be used against the Potters.
