James Potter has been crazy over Lily Evans from day 1, and all the Marauders (as well as the rest of the school) know it. Also well-known is the fact that Lily wants nothing to do with "the arrogant prat with the bowling-ball head," so the Marauders take things into their own hands... Craziness ensues, and really, Sirius is behind it, so how could it not.
