It sounded like a bad joke, but that was what happened to Dean Winchester in the middle of a hunt, and she seemingly knows more about what's going on than she lets on.

There were two armies, one of demons and one of hunters, each controlled by a Winchester brother. Eventually, all wars have to come to an end, and not everyone can survive them.
