  • Hang the Consequences

    He had almost been able feel the laughter in the teasing words, trying to draw him towards her, and they hit like knives as laughter had bubbled up in his chest. If he had laughed or smiled and let the grin crack through the agony on his face, then she won, and his suffering was for nothing.

  • Gifted Cruelty

    It was ironic that the final i's dotted and t's crossed on his life story would be being done in by a hippogriph. The same hippogriph, he suspected, that had escaped his grasp just minutes before he was to carry out the execution orders.

She could blame it on the heads that turned as her sister walked past or on the fine gifts their parents gave to their eldest daughter. But Astoria didn't envy Daphne's looks.
