Tag to "Reichenbach," S10 x 02. Just exploring possibilities in how Sam might bring his brother back from the edge of the falls.
After six exhausting days of nonstop cross-country salt-and-burns, almost no sleep, and a bar fight, all Sam and Dean wanted to do was reach Bobby's for some well-deserved down-time. But along the way, out of the blue, everything went sideways . . . and took Dean with it.
S2. Six weeks after the demon-driven semi crashed into the Impala. Another wreck, and two equally wrecked brothers. Separated from Dean, concussed Sam is trying to make sense of the world . . . and not doing well.
After a ghost hunt turned into a deadly drug bust, the wounded brothers fled to Bobby's for care. He brought them through, but not after Dean nearly died. Now they convalesced, but a worried Sam watched as his brother faced yet another challenge - and saw once again that Dean had no intention of saying anything about it. But it was serious, Sam knew. Dean didn't want pie.
Bobby Singer had watched the boys grow up in gulps and snatches, never on a daily basis. Now he saw them when they needed help with research-or when they were hurt. Like now. Bad enough when one was hurt, but both?
The Mark of Cain. The First Blade. An overpowering rage, all accepted to save heaven, to kill a Knight of Hell. And a man who dies, making the supreme sacrifice, only to resurrect as a demon. How do you help a beloved older brother who's been down such a dangerous path find his way back to sanity? Find his way back to himself? Sam, with Castiel's help, manages it.
Pre-S9. After a recent birthday, deep-thinker Sam is exploring the meaning of life - of Winchester lives specifically. He brings up a topic that's been bothering him for some time, asking the big question about complexities and impossibilities. Straight-shooter Dean, however, already knows the answer - and it's a very simple one.
(Set during the S4 premiere "Lazarus Rising.") Two phone calls from someone claiming he's a man that Bobby Singer knows is dead sends Bobby to the bottle . . . and to writing a heartfelt letter declaring all the things he wished he'd said, but never did. The Winchesters. An angel. The King of Hell, and the Father of Murder. A summoning results in a collection of brothers, friends, enemies; of humans, demons, and an angel of the lord, all united under the same roof for one sole purpose: to rid Dean of the Mark of Cain before it consumes him. But Plan A goes wrong.
Tag to 10x09 "Things We Left Behind" - As Dean descends again into the violence of the Mark, Sam's worst fears come true. But Dean is in shock, and all Sam can think to do is to get his brother home. Along the way, however, as his own levee breaks, an anguished Dean finally admits to a far more desperate hell: that, as demon, as "that thing," he'd tried to kill his Sammy.
The brothers often left things unspoken, particularly Dean, always reluctant to bare chick-flick feelings. Finally he had, and he and Sam began to forge a post-Demon Dean bond. But now unfinished business comes calling, someone who believes Dean is still a demon. And still needs killing. (Sequel, but can be read as a oneshot. References to S10 x 02 "Reichenbach.")
Post-Demon Dean, the brothers have done some soul-searching and -baring, but not enough. Then a rediscovered entry in John Winchester's journal provides Sam with an unexpected truth about his brother, and a lesson that even in confrontation, he and Dean can begin the process of healing two battered souls. Pre-Series fluff ficlet, set during Sam's freshman year at Stanford. A/N: It's just a gorgeous day outside in a college town, and I thought about Sam at school and far away - he thinks - from the life of a hunter. Or not. Because big bro is watching.
Tag to S10 x 03, "Soul Survivor." Despite appearances, the battle for Dean's humanity is far from over . . . and Sam is just realizing it. A temporary fix is not a true cure for Dean, any more than borrowed grace is a cure for Castiel.
Only Dean's beloved Impala could get them to safety after a bad hunt . . . but Sam was unconscious, and Dean in no shape to drive.
A ghost hunt in an abandoned house goes bad when it turns out to host all-too-human squatters. A bad fall for Dean through a rotted floor, Sam handcuffed . . . and as they work on a painful escape, a brotherly discussion about heroes and spaceships and saving asses.
AU. Pre-S10 premiere and whatever episode that will eventually answer all questions. No doubt those answers will be very different from what I knitted together here from viewing the promo, but I decided to play "What If" for the heck of it. Here is my take on how Sam and Cas caught, and turned, the demon who had once been Dean Winchester.
Dean had hauled his wounded brother to Bobby's for care, saying nothing about his own damage until it was nearly too late. Now he paid the price.
