Maybe, just maybe, he could have been saved in his youth, but he was locked from that path the moment he failed to save the one he loved. He has no answer. He still wishes to end his miserable existence. Chaldea is just another place to hurt him with familiar faces. But in the end, he is a hero.

No matter what it is, you have to start somewhere when doing something. For a shinobi, that starting point is your first kill. They've all had one, we just don't know the story of it. Now, however, we do. (Drabbles about different characters and their first kills!)
