The TARDIS team investigates a derelict starship while the Doctor has strange dreams.
During a mission for the Time Lords to observe a pre-warp civilization, Nita is injured and brought to a hospital, where the locals quickly realize she is not from their world. Despite the attempted intervention of the planet's sympathetic science minister, the Doctor's efforts to retrieve Nita are stymied by the government.
While en route to investigate a mysterious planet, Nita is rendered unconscious by an apparent wormhole. After she revives, the Doctor explains that she was unconscious for only thirty seconds but a variety of clues discovered around the TARDIS seem to indicate that he is lying.
As the Doctor contemplates his impending marriage to his companion Nita, he learns about the peculiar minutiae – such as last-minute jitters and ballroom dancing – that surround human nuptials. At the same time, he investigates the apparent death of the Rutan ambassador whom the TARDIS was ferrying to the Neutral Zone in order to conduct treaty negotiations with the Sontarans.
After learning that she has been accepted into the Timelord Academy, Ace welcomes the Doctor's invitation to accompany him on an away mission that could resolve a mining dispute on an arid world. But following a shuttle crash, a near disastrous search for water leaves the Doctor near death.
During a mission, the Doctor falls unconscious and awakens to discover that sixteen years have passed, and he has now regenerated. Having no memory whatsoever of the time that has passed, he begins to suspect that the future he finds himself in may not be real.
Ambassador Plakson returns to the TARDIS to advise the Doctor, who has been chosen as a neutral party to arbitrate the selection of the new Vor'chan leader from two candidates, O'Reilly and Massett, one of whom is suspected to be a traitor.
23rd story featuring by O.C. Nita. In this story, set in the 24th century, the TARDIS team is caught in the midst of a civil war on Traken, former companion Nyssa's homeworld. While negotiating with one of the factions, they discover that the faction's representative is Nyssa's younger sister, Beth.

As the star is about to explode, Schirron sends Ace back to the TARDIS and the two ships out of the system. But what about Elder?
