It's been about a week since Sarah Rogers' funeral, and Steve swore up and down he was fine, thanks just the same. Bucky hasn't seen him in a week or so and comes to check on him. Steve's got a funny definition of 'fine'.
What if Bucky didn't want to become an Avenger? What if he's had more than enough of fighting and violence to last several lifetimes and now he wants to save lives without endangering or ending any? My exploration of where Bucky COULD have gone after recovery: The path not traveled.
Steve is sick, just this side of dying, and he needs someone to take care of him. Bucky's the only one he's got, but he's already got his hands full trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. He does what he has to do to get them through.
