Post-Botfa, firmly in the movie verse. Fíli's last words had been for his family. He died sending them away, wishing desperately that they would be safe. When he wakes in the Halls of Waiting, that knowledge is a comfort to him. He is dead, but his brother and uncle survive. Or so he thinks. This is what happens when first Kíli and then Thorin join Fíli in death.
Dís learns of her sons' deaths in battle. She is the last direct descendent of Durin, but her cousin Dáin rules in Erebor. Dís has no time to grieve, as the succession is being decided. Dwalin supports her, but the battle has left him deeply scarred and soon Dís starts to question his loyalty. She does what is best for her people. Her sons deaths have not been in vain.
