George notices that, intentionally or otherwise, Hermione Granger is beginning to fill some of the spaces Fred left behind. The work that he and Fred had begun together is now more important to him than ever before, a legacy of the time they shared. If Hermione is endeavoring to help George make that legacy live on, then he will welcome her efforts with open arms.

Fred has died - but this Hermione decides that the world cannot go on without the Weasley twins together - that it needs the both of them to heal itself after the war - and makes a trade: her life for his. When Fred returns to his family, he lives for her.
