L can handle the detective Elisa just fine. He can handle the police officer Katy just as fine. He barely manages to handle his twin sister K. He cannot however handle all three.
Mello is arrested for the kidnapping of Sayu Yagami. A recruiter of Igura makes a deal with him to play the game, win, and leave. As a bonus he'll meet his only living relative, the Executioner Gunji. As insentive, he can force one other person to play.

The three do what they do best to catch the best (worst). They don't even realize how personal the case will get, but that doesn't mean they won't have the time of their lives.
