They are weary of potential saviors, especially if "the system" has failed them. Imagine a less trusting Harry enters the wizarding world, one w/a confidant. Assumes Marauders graduated i '75.

Abused children do not magically begin trusting new people when they are exposed to them, especially people who send them back for more abuse or who condone their abuse. Never really trusting Dumbledore, Harry begins suspecting him of less than benign intent following the Chamber of Secrets. Even though they lost the war, purebloods won in the end. Harry was sentenced to death for undermining the new world order. Death gave him one chance to make things right in the world. Takes place during the summer before fifth year. AU after the confrontations with the Dursleys after the dementors. Harry's trial results in a shift of power in the wizarding world.
