Acceptance is a weary emotion. Takumi learned this a long, long time ago. It's far easier to settle with what he has now than try to reach for what he couldn't. He's surviving and that's all that matters in the end. But all it takes is a not-so-minor illness to upend everything that Takumi thought he knew.
