Bruno Madrigal hasn't told his mamá about the side effects his gift has on his body. So, when she pressures him into having multiple visions to prove to the town that their magic is not dying, he must oblige, even at the cost of his own physical wellbeing.

When some of the townspeople see cracks in the Madrigal casita, Abuela pressures Bruno into having a vision to calm their worries about the magic dying. Only, the longer it takes for a vision to show a more favorable outcome, the more Bruno's body begins to fight back, physically deteriorating because of his own gift.
