"What the hell!" He flinched back from the window as the raven that had been staring at him through the curtains flew towards the crack that was between the panes and successfully entered the room. "Hey! Get out of here, you feathered flying piece of-" His eyes widened as it morphed until a girl clad in a plain black hospital gown fell in a heap against the wall. "Oh, shit…"
This was the area that the team leader had told him about, the Great Sphinx to his left and a pyramid to his right. The warnings and lore he'd been told rang loudly in his ears as he took the first step off the paved path to slightly sink into the unsupported sand. Even the archeologist that he was, Atem could not have predicted what lay beneath that would change his life forever.
There, nearly sandwiched between the sarcophagi's lid and internal compartment, was a person with an arrow protruding from from their chest. The falcon she'd nursed back to health seemed to beckon her closer with soft chirps as it lightly pecked at the arrow as if trying to remove it. Her fingers met the side of their neck and felt the faintest of pulses beneath; they were alive.
"I'm Anzu, by the way," she groaned while blindly examining the strange contraption's structure. "Why did they put this on you anyway?" Her motions halted as he stiffened, noises coming from the hallway just as her fingers found the bracket responsible for keeping the whole thing together. "I've almost…" The air rang with a telltale grind of metal. "Got it!"
Lucy shrugged, eyeing the nearby tray with distaste. Today was the last day she would have to take them though. The paperwork had been signed and she would have her freedom once more come morning. Then she could leave this facility behind her. No matter what others had said she knew he was real.
