2542. Humanity lost the war against the Covenant, and has been assimilated into the galaxy-spanning conglomerate. John-117 and his crew, formerly humanity's greatest champions, were forced into a life of crime in order to survive. Aboard the Firefly-class ship Serenity, they travel the galaxy with one mission: get a ship, get a crew, keep flying.

While the battle for the planet Daedalus rages in space, the Covenant searches for Forerunner artifacts on the surface. It is left to the Spartan-II Blue Team and their creator, Doctor Catherine Halsey, to make sure that the alien juggernaut doesn't get what it seeks. But when lines become blurred on both sides, it becomes a battle for survival for everyone.

"I've come for all sorts, you know," she said with a soft smile. "Some of them came willingly, some even invited me. Others fought, tooth and nail – like a feral beast hunted by its own personal nightmare. They all had one thing in common, though. In the end, everyone walks with me."

Six months after the fall of Earth, Blue Team is deployed to the planet Ballast - the birthplace of Frederic-104 - to retrieve a new innovation that could alter the course of the Created Conflict. Thrown into conflict with both the enemies of the UNSC and the past of one of their own, they find themselves in a race against time to deliver hope at one of humanity's darkest hours.
