Bruce Wayne's parents were shot and killed when he was eight years old, but his sister, Adeline, was under the care of Alfred Pennyworth at the time, sparing her the sight of the murder. Years later, Bruce is now Batman, and his sister, while mainly a renowned physician, does take time to play into her alter-ego of Vertigo, Batman's crime-fighting compatriot.
